Thailand’s Muaythai stadiums

Thailand, the home of Muaythai has many stadiums around the country that showcase the sport. Here we wil take a look at the main ones at the moment, where the best action takes place.

Lumpini Stadium

Located on Rama 4 road a short walk from Lumpini park and Lumpini MRT underground station, Lumpini boxing stadium is widely regarded as Thailand’s spiritual home of Muaythai. Founded in December 1956, the stadium is owned and run by the Royal Thai Army. Despite it’s lofty regard and renown for it’s high standard of fights, visitors first impressions can be a little surprising, the stadium is far from all mod cons and can look a little ramshackle, but with a full crowd and a close fight the atmosphere inside can be hard to beat. The stadium hosts fights every Tuesday, Friday and has two shows on Saturdays. The Lumpini title belt has to be the highest regarded in the sport and they have champions from Mini-flyweight up to Welterweight. There have been moves to relocate the stadium in recent years, but a recent decision was made to stay at the original site for now, due to high land costs and also the ease of accessibility and closeness to the tourist areas and hotels.

Ratchadamnern stadium
Although not held quite in as high regard as Lumpini stadium, the other main stadium in Bangkok, the Ratchadamnern stadium is actual older. It was originally commissioned by the Crown property bureau in 1941, but was delayed due to the Second World War and finished in December 1945. The Stadium was originally open air, but it was decided to fit it with a roof and more seating, which was completed in 1951. The stadium ownership changed hands in 1953, after the Crown property bureau didn’t want to continue running it at a loss and the Ratchadamnern co.ltd was formed. The stadium and its titles are still held in very high regard and it runs Lumpini very close in the level of fights and fighters that compete there. The Ratchadamnern stadium is situated on Ratchadamnern Nok Avenue across from the Chullachomklao Military Academy. The stadium has champions from Mini-flyweight up to Middleweight and the titles are regarded along with those at Lumpini as the top ones in the sport.

Channel 7 stadium

Located in the Channel 7 studios just across from Jatujak park and the renowned weekend market. The Channel 7 stadium hosts the Sunday afternoon televised fight show, which draws in the biggest T.V audience of the weekly shows. The show is run by Lumpini promotions team Sukkiatpetch promotions and is the show that most fighters like to get to fight on due to attractive bonuses from sponsors and the chance of an added bonus for the winner of fight of the week. The Channel 7 fights also have a hotly contested 1 million baht prize for the shows fight of the year, which is one of the big awards given out each year and has seen some classic battles take place in the attempt to win it. The stadium also has it’s own championship titles, but these are not held in the same regard as the ones from Lumpini or Ratchadamnern.

Siam Omnoi Stadium
Situated just outside Bangkok in Samut Sakhon province, Siam Omnoi stadium, a privately owned and run set-up, is home to the Saturday morning Channel 3 T.V fights. The stadium is known for having the most of the Televised tournaments and is home to the biggest of them all, the Isuzu Tournament now in it’s 18th year. The Channel 3 fights push the Channel 7 fights close in terms of viewing figures and although the Stadiums own titles, much like those at Channel 7 are not held in as high regard as the big two Lumpini and Ratchadamnern, there have been many big names holding Omnoi titles, Anuwat Kaewsamrit and Buakao Por Pramuk to name just two.

Bangkok boxing stadium
Home to the Saturday Channel 11 T.V fights, the Bangkok boxing stadium is the newest of all the stadiums, having been open just over a year. The stadium is located just off of the bustling Ratchada Pisek road and close to the Thailand Cultural centre. The stadium is operated by Thailand’s number one promotions team Sukonesongchai promotions, headed by Songchai Ratanasuban, who has done more than any other to raise the level of the sport in Thailand, so the level of the fighters is very strong and the weekly show regularly features the hot new talent coming though under Songchai’s promotional wing. The stadium also features an on site gym and accommodation facilities for Foreign boxers to use
